Automated training system

Sunday, 20 March, 2022

The training of animals for the purpose of behavioural testing can be faster and more successful with the use of the automated training system (ATS) without increasing the amount of work performed by the researcher. The ATS consists of a training chamber and two home cages, the latter are connected to the training chamber by corridors closed by motorized gates. The animals can enter the training chamber and complete the tasks for 15 minutes in every two hours a day. The success of ATSs therefore lies in the large number of experiments performed daily. Furthermore, this type of learning method does not involve significant stress for the animals based on our results, so animal behaviour can be studied closer to their natural one. In addition, the ATS boxes are also suitable for wireless optogenetic manipulations, which further broadens the scope of the use of ATSs.
