Neurons communicate with each other via chemical and electrical synapses.

The properties of synaptic communication can be revealed by characterizing action potential features and postsynaptic responses. To this end, we use whole-cell patch-clamp recordings in single neurons or in pairs of neurons. A neurotracer is used during recordings to fill up the neurons, therefore both their dendritic and axonal arborizations can be revealed, allowing the identification of neuronal types post hoc.
