Neuronal tract-tracing methods

Anterograde- and retrograde tract tracing molecules, like phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin, cholera-toxin β subunit or biotinylated dextrans are used to determine projection fields of neuronal groups and sources of neuronal inputs.
The tract-tracing molecules are applied to the specific brain areas by iontophoresis under stereotaxic control.
AAV mediated expression of fluorescent reporters combined with the Cre-Loxp system is used to determine the projection field and connectivity of chemically defined neuronal groups.
