How the Brain Links Fear to Negative Memories

When we recall an unpleasant memory, we do not simply replay it as detached observers watching a scene from a film: we often re-experience the emotion, including the fear, associated with the original event. Researchers at the HUN-REN Institute of Experimental Medicine are helping to explain how the brain links the retrieval of a memory to the accompanying feeling of fear. Their findings shed light on how persistent activity in this system may contribute to anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

Vaccination even during pregnancy is recommended

A new study in mice has found that COVID-19 or influenza vaccination during pregnancy does not cause the neurological changes that a real infection can trigger in the offspring. Researchers at the HUN-REN Institute of Experimental Medicine found that a treatment mimicking a viral infection produced a lasting, autism-like behavioural pattern in mouse pups, whereas the vaccines caused only mild, transient differences. The results therefore point clearly in favour of getting vaccinated.

A Key Protein Tunes the Strength of Communication Between Nerve Cells

Every time one nerve cell communicates with another, small structures at the synapse called vesicles release chemical messengers into the synaptic cleft between the cells. Before a vesicle can release its contents, however, it must first be prepared, or “primed” for release. The new study by Aldahabi and colleagues examines how this priming step affects the strength and diversity of connections between nerve cells.

Balázs Göcz won the Bolyai Research Fellowship

Several researchers from our institute also applied for the Bolyai Fellowship, the most prestigious scholarship for young researchers in Hungary, which was awarded this year to Balázs Göcz. Congratulations!

Everything you want to know and see about microglia...

Although neuroimmunology was already an established branch of neuroscience research by the 1980s, its recognition was nowhere near what it is today.

Closing conference of National Bran Research Program 3.0

As with previous events, the fourth and final conference of the National Brain Research Program (NAP) 3.0 was held at the Puchner Estate in Bikal.

Kati Lengyel's award

The Association of Women in Science (NaTE), which won the first Nature Innovating Science Award established by Nature and the Estee Lauder Company in 2018, began in 2008 with just 10 female researchers, with the goal of supporting women and girls in pursuing careers in science and technology. In 2013, the first Women in Science Excellence Award, established to recognize female researchers working in the fields of engineering, physics, astronomy, and space research, was presented; in recent years, the award has also been given to support research activities. This latter award was won by Katalin Lengyel, a research assistant in Balázs Hangya’s group.

Our Academia Europea Award-winning researcher, Csaba Fekete, has become our institute’s eighth member of the Academia Europaea

In recognition of his outstanding research work and achievements to date, Csaba Fekete, head of the Institute’s Integrative Neuroendocrinology Research Group, received the Academy Award on May 4, 2026, at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences’ 200th anniversary general assembly. A few days later, Csaba’s name appeared on the website of another academy. He is the eighth member from our institute to be elected to the Academia Europaea.

We used to have a Dog, Sziszi

She arrived on December 28, 2022, longing for adventure and a home, and I think she got both. She wandered off once or twice, but we always managed to find her that same day. Today, April 20, she could no longer walk, so we had to take her in and let her go for good. A small tree will keep her memory alive, and so will we.
